VEX Toss Up: The Field
VEX Toss Up: Overview
VEX Toss Up is played on a 12' by 12' field. There are two alliances, red and blue, with two teams to each alliance. Each game is two minutes long with two parts to the game, the autonomous period and the driver control period. The autonomous period is a 15 second long pre-programmed where teams attempt to score points, the team with the most points at the end of this period receives the 10 pt. autonomous bonus. The driver control period is 1 minute and 45 seconds long. During this time drivers control their robots and work with their alliance in attempts to outscore their opponents.
In this years game there are two types of scoring objects, a 5" truncated icosahedron shaped object and a 15.5"-16.5" inflatable ball with a weight inside. There are 20 BuckeyBalls, 10 red and 10 blue, and 8 Large Balls, 4 red and 4 blue. Each team must use one BuckeyBall as a pre-load. This pre-load does not have to be on the robot, but must be within the perimeter of that robot's starting tile. the other 16 BuckeyBalls are placed on the field, as are the 8 Large Balls. A robot may not be in possession of more than 3 BuckeyBalls at a time. This includes carrying, herding, intentionally pushing the BuckeyBalls, and trapping, pressing the BuckeyBalls against field objects.
The field is separated into three sections. The first section is from the far left wall to the gray bump, the Hanging Zone. The next zone is from the bump to the 12" elevated rails, the Middle Zone. The final zone is from the 12" elevated rails to the far right wall, the Goal Zone. In the Hanging Zone there are two PVC bars 40", one of each alliance color, and teams can hang from their alliance's bar. In the Goal Zone are two (24" tall 8" diameter) hexagonal goals. These are for 'stashing' BuckeyBalls, though Large Balls may be 'stashed' on top of the goals for points.
In this game there are many ways to earn points, whether by hanging, 'stashing,' or placing BuckeyBalls and Large Balls into certain sections of the field.
-------There are two types of hangings, a low hang and a high hang. A robot is low hanging if the lowest point of the robot is NOT about the 12" field barrier. A robot is high hanging if the lowest point of the robot is about the 12" field barrier. Each type of hang can be done with a Large Ball for more points. A low hang is worth 5 points, and with a Large Ball 15 points. A high hang is worth 10 points, and with a Large Ball 20 points. Hanging Bars, one red and one blue, are located in opposite corners of the Hanging Zone.
-------Points can be earned by 'stashing' BuckeyBalls and Large Balls in the Goals in the Goal Zone of the field. A 'stashed' BuckeyBall is worth 5 points, and a 'stashed' Large Ball is worth 10 points. A BuckeyBall is 'stashed' when it's inside the Goal, a Large Ball is 'stashed' when placed on top of the Goal.
-------BuckeyBalls and Large Balls can also be worth points when in certain sections of the field. Each BuckeyBall and Large Ball in the Middle Zone is worth 1 point. A BuckeyBall in the Goal Zone is worth 2 points, and each Large Ball in the Goal Zone is worth 5 points. BuckeyBalls and Large Balls in the Hanging Zone are NOT worth ANY points.
